Our Mission
Maker Mindset advances equitable education and sustainability through hands-on STEAM learning powered by community-donated materials.

About Maker Mindset
Maker Mindset is a tutoring service that supports students in literacy, math, and social-emotional development. We use a personalized, research-informed approach.
We did not begin as a tutoring service. We began as a nonprofit recycling makerspace. Community members donated materials. Students and families used those materials to build new creations. The focus was reuse, creativity, and hands-on making.
Over time, we noticed something important. These maker experiences supported learning. They helped students solve problems and think creatively. They also helped students understand abstract academic concepts in a concrete way.
We began to see building as a powerful learning tool. This shaped the evolution of Maker Mindset. We shifted from a recycling makerspace into an educational model. We now use hands-on building to support tutoring and skill development.
We believe education is not one-size-fits-all. Every child learns differently. Our instruction reflects that. We use ongoing student data to guide individualized lessons. We also use explicit, systematic instruction when needed. Our goal is to close learning gaps while building confidence and independence.
What makes Maker Mindset unique is our use of STEAM projects. Students engage in design challenges alongside targeted instruction. These activities build oral language, problem-solving, executive functioning, and real-world application of skills.
Students use accessible materials such as fabrics, tools, and donated resources. They turn these materials into meaningful projects. Students do not just complete assignments. They create, reflect, revise, and apply their learning.
We serve families seeking structured, evidence-based tutoring with a multisensory approach. This is especially helpful for students who benefit from hands-on learning.
Our long-term vision is to expand into a full makerspace in Montgomery County. This space will serve learners of all ages. It will continue using community-donated materials for building and learning.
At Maker Mindset, we combine explicit instruction with experiential learning. This helps students build academic skills, executive functioning, and confidence for long-term success.
Data-Informed & Responsive
We use ongoing assessment and observation to guide instruction. Lessons are age-appropriate, skill-aligned, and tailored to each learner’s strengths and needs. When foundational skills require strengthening, we provide explicit, systematic, multisensory structured literacy and math instruction. Project-based learning builds understanding; targeted instruction closes gaps. Both are essential.
